LOCATION: Oceanside, CA

COMMENTS:

It's been over a week and no word from the Snowfo. Well, I'll tell ya, I've been out here vegin' in So Cal. Spending some down time with my daughter Kim. The importance of this time together was really driven home last Monday.

A friend, Carl Bartok, a good young guy, quite unexpectedly passed away last Monday due to a heart problem. Carl and I met when he came to work at Fawcett Boat Supplies (I can't remember the year) as the rigger and we struck up a lasting friendship. We shared a lot of great times and laughs including a few drinks at Pussers the week before I left on this trip. I was really fortunate to have had this opportunity to be with him. He'll be missed but certainly remembered.

Took the bike in for its 36000 mile service and a new rear tire. Hard to believe I had the tire replaced here last year. So the ol' gal (I'm speaking of Big Blue, not Connie) should be ready for the run home. Speaking of the run home, that begins next Thursday, July 26 when I take off for San Francisco. Connie meets me there on Saturday. She is supposed to ride with me the rest of the way home but I bought an insurance ticket for her from Omaha, NE just in case Mutha Nature doesn't cooperate. I mean I've faced typhoons, drought, 100+ temperatures, fires and now ... earthquakes!!!!! Sounds like Holy Armageddon! The route home is up through Napa, over to the coast, up and over to Crater Lake, Bend, OR where we'll head East and follow US 20 to I 80 in Nebraska and then ...

Today, Saturday, Dave, new friends, Harry and Jan, and I took a day ride out into the hills, just like the Wild Hogs!!! The marine layer kept it cool in the beginning but temps eventually reached the mid 90's. Our goal was The Hideout Saloon near Lake Henshaw. Unfortunately the saloon was closed but never fear, on to Julian ... ne, famous Julian ... known throughout the land Julian. You ask, "Just what is Julian noted for?" Apple Pie. Apparently folks start lining up at 5am for these things. Life has got to be pretty slow around there, I mean, I can see it for an Iphone or Harry Potter, but an apple pie ... yawn! Besides, I haven't seen any apple orchards around here. I think Table Talk Pies has some sort of gig going. You can lead a Californian to water AND make him drink!

Hope you like the pics. I'll add some more over the next couple of days before I cut outta here.
